After a summer of exploring and, well, eating my way through the island, I was able to find the best places to go eat. Here are my top choices for Pleasure Island!
Freddies is an Italian family restaurant and probably the most snazzy place in Kure Beach. The atmosphere is a lot like an Irish pub, but the service is like a 5-star restaurant. The food and service is well worth your dollar. I recommend the steak or chicken alfredo.
Kure Beach Diner is right next to Freddies, but closest to the pier. I really love their burgers and breakfast food! Their burgers are sold out of another shop called Beach House Burgers, which is only open during the summer. Thankfully they don’t make the locals wait all winter for one of their famous burgers!
Nollie’s Taco Joint is a cool hangout with great atmosphere and the best tacos on the island! The name Nollie is based on a skateboarding trick, which is why they have tons of cool boards as decor. It’s a badass place!
El Cazador has everything you could want… AND seafood! The menu is huge and it’s all great. During the summer, go on a Thursday and ask for a table near the window to watch the fireworks. It’s dinner AND a show!
Asian / Sushi
Nikki’s Sushi is a high-end sushi place with excellent daily dine-in specials. Plate presentation is impeccable. The crab rangoon, Pad Thai and Lo Mein are excellent! There are a few other locations in the surrounding area as well.
Ida Thai is a unique little place featuring authentic Thai food. I was introduced to this place, and Thai food in general, by a coworker. We ordered take-out one day and I fell absolutely in love. The garlic ginger chicken is a must try! Portions are very reasonable just like the prices.
People come from all over for Britt’s Doughnuts famous, warm, melt-in-your-mouth glazed donuts. It doesn’t get any fresher than Britt’s! They only serve one kind of donut, but it’s really all you need. Something you need to taste to believe!
Be sure to make this stop during the summer months because they close down during the off-season.
Beer & Atmosphere
You won’t find food at The Fat Pelican, but they do have a self-serve, walk-in cooler with several great selections. Just because it’s self-serve doesn’t mean they skimp on customer service. The staff are VERY welcoming and wonderful with a make-yourself-at-home attitude. The entire place is decorated inside and out. It’s no question why this place was voted the #1 Dive Bar in NC and in the 25 in the nation in 2015! Just remember, Beer Is Love.
They Have It All
SeaWitch Tiki Bar pretty much does everything. Plus great live bands like Junkyard Mama playing every weekend. The atmosphere, food and service are top notch. Hands-down best place on Pleasure Island!
